The exhibition LIVING HERITAGE: Traditional Construction in the 21st Century, open to the public at the Museum of Santa Cruz in Toledo between June 2 and September 24, 2023, presents the work of the master craftspeople honored in the 2023 Richard H. Driehaus Building Arts Awards, the winners of the 2022 Donald Gray Grant, and several masters of traditional building from both the province of Toledo and the rest of the provinces of Castilla-La Mancha.

A series of workshops have been organized in the context of this exhibition to promote the knowledge and appreciation of traditional building techniques as well as to bring the general public closer to the work of the masters who still preserve and put them into practice.

Requests for registration should be made through the e-mail actividades@intbauspain.com.

The name of the activity must be indicated in the subject line of the e-mail and the message must include the name, age and contact details (telephone and e-mail) of the applicant, together with a brief statement explaining why the person wishes to participate in the chosen workshop.

The admission period will close 5 days before the beginning of each workshop. To participate in these workshops it is not necessary to have previous knowledge, they are open and prepared for all audiences.

Wood color workshop with Paco Luis Martos
Wednesday, September 6, 2023. From 17:00 to 20:00
Museo de Santa Cruz, Toledo

The master carpenter Paco Luis Martos will present various techniques used historically to polychrome wood. To do so, different mixtures, pigments and traditional motifs will be used. Each participant will be able to put into practice the knowledge acquired and prepare their own wooden boards with the desired motifs.

Tile making workshop with Centro Cerámico Talavera
Thursday, September 7, 2023. From 17:00 to 20:00
Museo de Santa Cruz, Toledo

Master ceramists from Centro Cerámico Talavera will accompany participants through the process of producing an arista tile. Each participant will have the opportunity to prepare their own tile and learn the techniques necessary to complete each of the steps involved in its production.

Traditional forging workshop with Ramón Recuero and Miguel Ángel M. Luque
Friday, September 8, 2023. From 17:00 to 20:00
Museo de Santa Cruz, Toledo

Master blacksmiths Ramón and Miguel Ángel will provide a hands-on demonstration of various traditional forging techniques. They will also present different types of forged pieces, as well as the characteristic tools of their trade.

Master yesaires Ramón Rubio and Julio Jiménez will introduce participants to the secrets of their craft and teach the complete process of how plasterwork is built, from its layout to its construction and decoration.

Workshop on half-timbered walls and trabadillo finishes with Jesús Adeva

Master mason Jesús Adeva will introduce participants to the materials and techniques used to build the characteristic half-timbered walls and trabadillo finishes characteristic of Toledo.

2nd Course on Mudejar Carpentry “Consorcio de la Ciudad de Toledo”
From Monday, September 11 to Friday, September 15, 2023. From 9:00 to 14:00. 25 hours. Limited places Escuela Taller Municipal / Campus UCLM. Toledo The registration fee for this course is 50€.

Javier de Mingo (architect) and Ángel Martín (mudejar carpentry specialist) will provide both a theoretical and hands-on approach to Spanish mudejar carpentry. The students will learn to design, trace and cut the basic pieces of a roof structure, working on a scale model of the coffered ceiling of the Salón Rico del Corral del Don Diego in Toledo, recently restored by the Consorcio. As a conclusion to the course, Enrique Nuere (PhD architect and specialist in mudejar carpentry) will deliver a master class on the evolution of Spanish historical carpentry and its relationship with the city of Toledo. Master Diego Rodríguez will introduce participants to the materials and techniques characteristic of his craft. The workshop will focus on the traditional facade coatings of Toledo and, specifically, on trompe l’oeil, which are so characteristic of this city. The workshop will conclude with a walk around Toledo, in order to visit some of the most representative examples.

The master painter and scagliola artist Luis Prieto, who has extensive experience making the characteristic Toledo coatings, will introduce participants to the materials and techniques used in their production.

Ceramic mosaic of Nasrid geometry with Fátima Quesada

Museo de Santa Cruz, Toledo

The master ceramist will introduce the participants to the creation and composition of the geometric ceramic mosaic by presenting its layout, its design and the use of different geometric patterns. The participants will elaborate a small example of this technique.

Workshop on shingle roofs from the Irati Forest with Javier Goicoa and Jesús María Larrañeta
Sunday, September 24, 2023. From 10:00 to 13:00
Museo de Santa Cruz, Toledo

Javier Goicoa and Jesús María Larrañeta, master shingle roofers from the Irati area in Navarra, will explain and carry out a demonstration of how this type of roofing is built, from obtaining the appropriate wood, to the production of the shingles and their placement on the roofs.
