This year the program is taking place in Lajes, one of the three municipalities in the Pico Island, within the Portuguese archipelago of Azores, in July 6th – 19th.
The application and registration proccess is already open.
Local traditional urbanism, architecture and building details will be studied in order to create a preservation and new traditional building manual for the area and, based on it, to design upgrade proposals for different public places of the town. Participants will have the chance to share ideas and work together with faculty and students from many nationalities in order to develop those proposals. Experts in local vernacular architecture and building techniques will be lecturing on diverse related topics. There will be trips around this region and some building sites will be visited too.
The registration fee, which includes tuition, accommodation, meals and transportation during the two weeks of the Summer School (travels from Lisbon to Azores and from Azores to Lisbon too), is 340 euros (the real cost of this course is 2100€ per participant, but, thanks to the support of the R.H.Driehaus Charitable Lead Trust, the Fundación Ekaba and the Municipality of Lajes, the participation fee is 340€)
This year, the Fundação Serra Henrriques offers 8 grants covering the registration fee (340€) for students of Portuguese Universities. Mina and Alireza Sagharchi offer two grants (340€) to international participants.
Those interested in participating must fill in the application form or send an email before April 17th to: premiorafaelmanzano@gmail.com. We are developing a selection process among all candidates and several places will be reserved for the students of the participating universities.
