Call for entries for the European Heritage Awards/Europa Nostra Awards 2023 now open

The European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Awards aim to identify, recognise and support best practices in the preservation of cultural heritage, as well as innovative developments and knowledge in the care and promotion of tangible and intangible cultural heritage. The call is open until 25 November 2022.

The finalists of the 15th edition of the National Crafts Awards have been published

The National Crafts Prize is intended to recognise a professional career as a whole. This year the award will be contested by Artesanía en Vidrio J. Sorribes, a company that works glass in Valencia; Blancafort Orgueners de Montserrat, master organ builders from Barcelona; and Paco Luis Martos, a specialist in Mudejar coffered ceilings from Jaén, Andalusia.

Both Paco Luis Martos and Vidrio J. Sorribes are part of the Spanish Network of Traditional Building Crafts Masters. The former was also awarded the Richard H. Driehaus Building Arts Award in 2020.

Other institutions with which INTBAU Spain regularly collaborates, such as the Escuela de Formación en Artesanía, Restauración y Rehabilitación del Patrimonio Histórico, Artístico y Cultural Albayzín in Granada, or the Asociación Cultural Hornos de la Cal de Morón, have been selected in other categories.

Eighth session of the Architecture Challenge, organised by INTBAU

The eighth session of the Architecture Challenge, organised by INTBAU, took place on Tuesday 24 October.

The speakers took a critical look at linear supply chains. Other topics such as the decrease of material resources or the increasing demand for new buildings were also discussed. In addition, architect Jorge Silva delivered a presentation on the vernacular architecture of the island of Pico, in the Azores archipelago, where the Rafael Manzano Prize Summer School of Traditional Architecture took place this summer.

Utrecht Summer School Video

This summer the summer school “Let’s Build a Beautiful City”, organized by INTBAU Netherlands, took place in Utrecht. 22 students of up to 11 different nationalities came to Utrecht to study the traditional architecture and urban planning of the city. The following video summarizes the experience.

Master stained glass artist Carlos Muñoz de Pablos, “hijo predilecto” of the city of Segovia

The City Council of Segovia has awarded the title of “hijo predilecto” of the city to the artist Carlos Muñoz de Pablos, who has also received the medal for cultural merit. Carlos Muñoz de Pablos received in 2020 the Richard H. Driehaus Building Arts Award in the category of metal and glass works.

Registration for the “Oasis Campus” workshop organized by Terrachidia is now open

The Oasis Campus workshop, which will take place from January 22 to 29, 2023 in M’Hamid, Morocco, is part of the Terrachidia ONGD project, which is committed to the local development of small communities through the enhancement of their architectural and cultural heritage. These workshops combine the safeguarding of cultural heritage with cooperative development and participants learn to work with traditional earthen building techniques from local master builders.

Course “Tree wood II: Half-timber structures” in Villanueva de la Vera, Cáceres

Arquitectura Verata has organized the course “Tree Wood II: Half-timber structures”, which will take place on November 25, 26 and 27, 2022 in Villanueva de la Vera, in the province of Cáceres. The course, delivered by structural carpentry specialists Enrique Nuere and Javier de Mingo, will cover the structural principles of half-timber structures and will include the layout of a traditional roof and the assembly of a model and a wooden truss.

Conference “Construction History Society of America”

On June 22, 23 and 24, 2023, the eighth Building History Conference will be held at The University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. The conference will present research focused on the history of building design and construction. This includes not only the physical results (infrastructure and buildings) but also the materials, processes and systems used in their construction. Abstracts can be submitted until December 15, 2022.
