The Third International Conference on Traditional Building, Architecture and Urbanism was held on November 18, 19 and 20, 2022. Its contents were related to the practice and training in the traditional building trades, and, therefore, in addition to a series of lectures at the School of Architecture of the Universidad Polit\u00e9cnica de Madrid, a series of workshops were visited and some technical visits were made in Madrid, Segovia and Toledo, guided by different traditional building masters.<\/p>\n

The live program of the conference included a series of lectures that took place on the morning of Friday, November 18 at the School of Architecture of the Universidad Polit\u00e9cnica de Madrid. Among the speakers were Urko S\u00e1nchez, Fernando Malo, Francisco Ortega, Leopoldo Gil Cornet, Fernando Cerqueira Barros and Juan Luis Camacho, all of them architects or traditional building masters. With the scagliola master Luis Prieto and the master mason Alejandro Ciudad<\/p>\n

On the afternoon of Friday, November 18, conference attendees had the opportunity to visit the workshop of scagliola master Luis Prieto, 2019 winner of the Richard H. Driehaus Building Arts Award, which is located in the heart of the historic center of the capital. At the workshop, master mason Alejandro Ciudad, a member of the Spanish Network of Traditional Building Crafts Masters, conducted a demonstration of how lime is worked. The visit was completed with a tour of the historic facades of the capital, in which Luis Prieto showed the attendees the variety of existing finishes and described technically how each one is carried out.<\/p>\n

Visit to the Vetraria workshop and the stained glass windows of the Cathedral of Segovia<\/strong>

On the morning of Saturday, November 19, conference attendees visited the workshop of master stained glass artists Alfonso and Pablo Mu\u00f1oz de Pablos, winners in 2020 of the Richard H. Driehaus Building Arts Award, located on the outskirts of the city of Segovia. Here they had the opportunity to discover how the stained glass windows that make up much of Spain’s historical heritage are made. The visit continued in the cathedral of the city of Segovia, where the Mu\u00f1oz de Pablos brothers have been working for years on the restoration of its stained glass windows.<\/p>\n

During the afternoon of Saturday, November 19, Julio Barbero \u2013 who is a master on traditional finishes \u2013 assisted by several workers who usually collaborate with him, carried out a demonstration in the Church of San Nicol\u00e1s \u2013 a space kindly provided by the City Council \u2013 of how the characteristic sgraffito of the city of Segovia is carried out. This demonstration was followed by a walk through the traditional facades of the historic center of the city.<\/p>\n

Introduction to mudejar carpentry and visit to the coffered ceiling of the Sal\u00f3n Rico, in Toledo<\/strong>
With the mudejar carpentry masters Javier de Mingo and Angel Maria Martin<\/p>\n

On the morning of Sunday, November 20, the conference attendees traveled to the city of Toledo, where the mudejar carpentry masters Javier de Mingo and \u00c1ngel Mar\u00eda Mart\u00edn showed the principles of mudejar carpentry in the Sal\u00f3n Rico, a space of great interest kindly provided by the Consorcio de Toledo to carry out this activity. To perform the demonstration they not only made use of an excellent model of the coffered ceiling that covers the space, but the attendees had the unique opportunity to see up close the coffered ceiling itself.<\/p>\n

The visit to the city of Toledo was completed with a tour of the city, in which master mason Jes\u00fas Adeva, recipient of the Richard H. Driehaus Building Arts Award in 2022, showed the great variety of trompe l’oeil<\/em> and other types of finishes that can be found on the facades of the residential and public buildings that make up the historic center of the city of Toledo.<\/p>\n
